Guest Bedroom and New Ensuite
This large guest bedroom had wasted space which frustrated the owners. The designer suggested incorporating an ensuite to enhance privacy when visitors came, plus a separate walk in dressing room and airing cupboard to maximise on storage.
Careful dimensioning was required, as measurements were tight to incorporate both rooms: The challenge was nevertheless achievable with the careful selection of shower room furniture. Attention to detail was paramount for the small ensuite to not look cramped, so textured 3D geometric tiles were applied to a feature wall, and offset by larger concrete effect porcelain tiles on all remaining walls and floor. Three backlit alcoves were slotted into a false wall in the shower cubicle for practical and aesthetic purposes, and a shower tray with shimmering sympathetic tones now adds to the feel. A sensor-lit mirror and streamlined vanity / toilet unit were chosen for a slick and practical feel, as too was the ladder effect heated towel rail. Robust planning for effective plumbing, electrical and ventilation works were of paramount importance, as too was the appointment of a good tiler.
The main bedroom has an easterly facing window, so it was decided to reposition the bed to face out towards the extensive country views and morning sun. The budget for the room was largely absorbed by the new ensuite, so a brief to reuse certain soft furnishings while seeking a more dramatic and restful look was worked with: The existing bed was colour washed to an off white, ceiling roses with rings were relocated to the new centre of the bedroom, with the ceiling being given our favoured design treatment of continuing the wall coloured paint of Farrow and Ball’s Strong White onto that surface while picking out the plasterwork in brilliant white (the ornate coving was also reproduced to follow the new lines around the ceiling). The owners wished to keep the black chandelier, and we worked with a dramatic monochromatic theme for these purposes. Old picture frames were painted black and transformed into large mirrors and a new designer sofa creates an additional restful zone. Shagreen beside tables also add a luxurious texture next to the retained gold lamps.
New full length Florence radiators were selected for their traditional style with modern lines, plus their height in the room was befitting a very high ceiling, both visually next to the ornate cornicing and for the BTU output.
Grey and gold soft furnishings finish the setting with an injection of colour from the stunning marble fireplace, and some choice artwork was incorporated for balance and interest.
